What is B Lab and Sistema B?
B Lab is a non-profit organization responsible for coordinating the B Corporation Movement and organizing company certification. It operates globally, but has local partners in various regions of the world.
Sistema B is the name given to the local partner responsible for the Latin American region.
The aim of the B Corporation Movement is to “redefine the concept of success in business and economy”. An economy in which success is measured by the well-being of people, society and nature.
What do I need to be a B Corp?
To become a B Corporation, a business must meet the following requirements:
- Achieve more than 80 points on the B Impact Assessment, a platform for evaluating a company’s social and environmental performance.
- Make its B Impact Assessment score transparent in the B Corp directory.
- Make contractual changes, inserting B clauses. They guarantee the company’s commitment to going beyond its financial and economic interests in its decision-making. The company reinforces and protects its mission to commit to social and environmental responsibilities throughout its operations.
- Be a for-profit entity.
- Have been operating for more than 12 months, as the assessment takes into account the last fiscal year.
- Companies with less than 12 months of operation can apply to receive the Pending B Corporation label.
- Operate in competitive markets, not acting as a monopoly or controlled by the government.
What is the B Impact Assessment?
This is the tool developed by B Lab to measure a company’s social and environmental performance, taking into account all its stakeholders. Through an open, online, free and confidential platform. The criteria take into account global guidelines for advancing sustainable development. Local aspects are also taken into account, specific to each country, sector and area in which the company operates.
The company’s operational practices and business model are assessed according to five impact areas: governance, workers, community, clients and the environment.
Completing the B Impact Assessment is the first step towards becoming a Certified B Corporation. If you achieve at least 80 points, you can go through the review process with the B Lab and apply for certification.
